THE OLD SCHOOL,STURMINSTER MARSHALL,BH21 4BU will be the venue for our next Special Interest Day

Born in Teddington, Noel Coward was a man of profound talent- playwright, composer, director, actor and singer. He was known for his wit, flamboyance, and what Time magazine called “a sense of personal style, a combination of cheek and chic, pose and poise.”He attended a dance academy as a child and made his professional debut at the age of eleven. He made his entry into high society as a teenager and later set most of his plays in it. He composed hundreds of songs, musical theatre works, screen plays, poetry and short stories. His career spanned sixty years. During WW2 he ran the British propaganda office in Paris, and then joined the Secret Service to persuade the American government and people to help Britain. Later, at   Churchill’s behest, he entertained the troops in all the theatres of war to uphold morale.

He was knighted in 1969, given a Tony Award for “ Lifetime Achievement” in 1972, elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, and made an Honorary Doctor of Letters at Sussex university .He died at his home in Jamaica, and a plaque was placed in Poets’ Corner in Westminster Abbey  in 1984.

Frances Hughes is a lecturer in Art and Theatre History, and her daughter Sarah is a professional Casting Director for theatre and television and a teacher at a number of Drama Schools.
